War in Words Exhibition

As part of the Haworth annual 1940's weekend Hall Green are hosting this exhibition featuring poems and prose about the horror and heartache of war.  We are delighted to re-produce parts of this exhibition on our website.

War is an emotive topic.  How can we be blasé or unfeeling when so many lives are at stake, when freedoms need to be defended or justice needs to be carried out.  Yet, in the present days we are so used to hearing about war that the truth of suffering and sacrifice becomes easily diminished.

We initially asked members of Hall Green Chapel to consider individual words so often associated with it but from the perspective of the Christian faith.  This developed into a collection of poems, psalms and prose which we are pleased to reproduce in part here.  Of course war and conflict are not new and so the pieces included draw on sources from a number of eras and conflicts.

We trust you will find them thought provoking and inspirational.  Please follow the links on the right to access the different sections.

We would of course encourage you to visit the exhibition yourself if you are able,  held in the main Chapel on the afternoons of 15 and 16 May 2010.
