War Poetry
There are many examples of poetry written by men serving in the armed forces during the war. Some survived to pass on and publish their work whilst others died and their words discovered among journals returned to their families. Much of the poetry included in our exhibition was written during the first world war by men in the trenches. Here there is no room for sentimentality, such men had seen and touched death itself. It is such grim reality that is so often missing in the modern portrayal of war. Yet, it is an important reminded that we shall all see death and this is the imperative. For death is fast approaching but is not in itself the end.
